The Egyptian authorities accused the American company Netflix of grossly distorting history due to the choice of a black actress for the role of Cleopatra in the new series. It is reported by the Daily Mail.
The Queen Cleopatra miniseries, which airs May 10, stars Adele James, a black woman, and the casting decision, according to the streaming giant, is “a tribute to a centuries-old dispute over the ruler’s race.”
The executive producer of the picture is the black Hollywood star Jada Pinkett-Smith. The eight-episode drama is positioned as a documentary.
However, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities says the film’s documentary nature “requires those responsible for its production to verify accuracy and rely on historical and scientific facts.” And ancient coins and statues depict Cleopatra as a fair-skinned woman, which corresponds to the data on her Macedonian Greek origin.
Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the appearance of a black Cleopatra in the series is “a falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant historical misconception.”
He added that his words have nothing to do with “ethnic racism” and that he respects African civilizations and “our brothers in the African continent that unites us all.”
