An Australian woman underwent a routine tummy tuck, which led to her developing a rare infection and falling into a coma eight days following the operation.

Brianna McIntosh, who grew up in Tasmania, underwent a tummy tuck following losing 50kg and needed to remove loose skin from her body, on March 23rd. Eight days following the surgery, things took a dangerous turn, and she developed an infection in her lower abdomen that turned into a serious infection that posed a threat to her life, according to the UAE 24 website.

Doctors discovered that Brenna was suffering from an extremely rare condition sometimes referred to as “flesh erosion disease”, which is caused by a germ that causes severe infections. Fortunately, Brianna woke up from her coma that lasted several days.

Since arriving at Alfred Hospital on Friday night, Brenna has been receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy twice a day as the inflammation began to slow down due to the oxygen. She also underwent several surgeries to remove as much dead tissue and infection as possible.

Brenna will face a long period of recovery, which will force her to stop working for several months, and lose her income. Since she needs a lot of costs for treatment, her friend Laurie set up a page on GoFund Me to collect donations for her treatment costs. In addition to the “Go Fund Me” page, friends also organized a charity raffle to help Briana pay for treatment until her condition improves and she returns to work.

Briana publishes regular updates on her condition on her Tik Tok page, where she said in her last clip that she is excited to have the next surgery that will bring her one step closer to recovery, according to the British Daily Mail.
