She scams for more than $70,000, but only has to pay back $7.90

After tricking hundreds of people into believing she had cancer, a UK woman will only have to pay $7.90 to compensate them, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

Nicole Elkabbas created a GoFundMe in 2018 to raise money to treat her alleged ovarian cancer.

With the help of approximately 700 donors, she managed to raise $71,703.28.

She said she had undergone three operations and chemotherapy treatments and that she needed money to get a new medicine in Spain. The woman also claimed to be being treated by a doctor named Filipe Suarez at a Spanish hospital.

But, in reality, she did not suffer from cancer. She had been tested a few weeks before creating the GoFundMe. And, Dr. Filipe Suarez did not exist.

Instead, she used the money to lead the life of her dreams, funding her travels and shopping sprees. The 44-year-old also had a gambling addiction.

It was her oncologist, who had examined her, who discovered Ms Elkabbas’ GoFundMe page.

At her trial in November 2020, she pleaded not guilty. She actually believed she had cancer, she said.

However, in 2021, she was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

She will also have to give back the money she stole from the 700 victims. However, since she has no assets, she can only pay them $7.90.
