Of course, she then left him to die of suffocation while she slept upstairs in their house.

Sarah Boone, 47, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Jorge Torres Jr., prosecutors said in a news release. “This is a truly horrific murder,” said District Attorney Andrew Bain. “No one deserves this excruciating death, trying to breathe in a suitcase. Today, justice was served with the conviction of Sarah Boone.”

Boone’s lawyer, James Owens, said his client was shocked by the decision, claiming the 47-year-old suffers from “battered wife syndrome”. “He believed that the defense had succeeded in convincing the jury,” he said.

During her trial testimony, Boone claimed she was drinking with the victim on the night of February 23, 2020, when Torres suddenly suggested they play hide and seek. He then put himself inside a large suitcase for fun and Boone shut him in, continuing his “joke”. However, Boone testified that she intended to “teach him a lesson” because of his abusive behavior.

Soon, Torres started having trouble breathing and begging her to release him, but she refused.

In the video she took of the incident, she can be heard taunting him, reminding him of the times he had hit her, while he calls her name in vain for help.

Boone testified that while trapped in a suitcase, her boyfriend threatened to “finish her” if she came out. At one point, Torres tried to remove his hand from the suitcase, but she hit him with a bat to pull it back. Fearing his wrath if he finally broke free, the woman left the man in the suitcase and went upstairs to the bedroom, where she fell asleep.

Boone testified that she did not believe Torres was going to die and thought he would be able to get out on his own.

When she woke up the next day and went downstairs to the living room, she found the man dead.

During the trial, prosecutors disputed Boone’s claims that she just wanted to teach him a lesson. They also presented testimony indicating that he may have pushed the suitcase with Torres inside, causing him to fall down the stairs.

Boone’s sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 2, and the woman faces up to life in prison.
