A horror scene. On February 3, a mother from Broken Hill, Australia discovered the lifeless body of her teenage daughter on her bedroom floor. 16-year-old Brooke Ryan was found near a bottle of deodorant spray, suggesting she died of a heart attack following playing the infamous ‘deodorant game’.
Widespread in some schools, this practice consists of voluntarily inhaling the gases of a deodorant in search of a feeling of inebriation.
Devastated, Brooke’s mother, Anne Ryan, spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald to raise awareness regarding the “game” that claimed her daughter’s life. It requires more prevention among young people, but also among their parents.
“I get up, I think of her, I go to bed, I think of her. Every day is a nightmare,” she told the Australian newspaper. “She was a beautiful girl with a heart of gold, who will leave a huge void and would be absolutely devastated to know the impact her death has on so many people.” Schooled in 1st class, the young Brooke was a talented footballer belonging to the North Football Club. She dreamed of becoming a lawyer, physiotherapist or beautician.
