Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munirakaram General Assembly representing the Like-Minded Group, called for the restoration of the General Assembly’s role in ‘resolving conflicts and renewing the process of disarmament and arms control’.
He said ‘United Nations system can be strengthened only by strict adherence to all the principles of its charter. We therefore regret that the agreement failed to mention some basic principles such as sovereignty, equality, non-interference in internal affairs and deprivation of the right to self-determination of peoples under colonial and foreign occupation.’
The like-minded group or LMG includes Algeria, Bolivia, China, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nicaragua, Russia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and Pakistan are included.
Manirakaram said that the position of the like-minded group in the world organization is that the dialogue process is necessary to strengthen the United Nations system and speed up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
He has said that the UN system can be strengthened only by following the principles of the UN Charter.
The Pakistani delegate said that the like-minded group has described the violation of the UN Charter and international laws, geopolitical tensions and unresolved conflicts as a serious threat to global peace and security.
Muneer Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, said that in order to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, it is necessary to adhere to past agreements and changes in existing agreements are not acceptable.
He said the group expressed concern over the weakening of the additional dimension of environmental finance under the Paris Agreement.

Explaining the position of LMG, Munir Akram said that the group gives top priority to strengthening the UN system to ensure compliance with the objectives and principles of the UN Charter.
He said that the LMG member countries believe that these objectives can be achieved through a comprehensive, transparent and balanced negotiation process.
Munir Akram said that the group has consistently emphasized the importance of addressing real threats and challenges to international peace and security.
