Six people, their dreams, their struggles: When the Second World War broke out on September 1, 1939, the world was on the brink. Six people in different countries and life situations have to make decisions: What do they want to fight for? Wernher von Braun, Hedwig Höß, Nikita Khrushchev, Joan Hinton, Golda Meir and Frantz Fanon represent the different paths in life and perceptions of their world. The six-part documentary drama series follows them into the 1960s, when the division in the world becomes apparent. All episodes will be available in the ARTE and ARD media libraries from October 31st and will be broadcast on ARTE on November 5th and 6th from 8:15 p.m. Episodes 1 and 2 will be shown on November 11th at 10:50 p.m. in DAS ERSTE.

The six-part documentary drama series tells real destinies and follows the lives of Wernher von Braun, Hedwig Höß, Nikita Khrushchev, Joan Hinton, Golda Meir and Frantz Fanon. As a combination of elaborate game scenes, eyewitness reports and newly colored archive material, the series documents the period from the Second World War to the 1960s, the era when the world was divided into East and West and the beginning of decolonization. The historical drama narrative is the backbone of the series. Through meticulous research, the fictional adaptation comes as close as possible to the historical events. On a visual level, the drama is interwoven with little-known archive footage, which was colored for the first time for this production. This creates an unprecedented emotional closeness to the action, a feeling for time, an immersion in the moment of action.

From National Socialism to decolonization
The series tells the Second World War and its consequences from a transnational perspective, also tangibly for a younger generation. National Socialism, the Holocaust and the war of annihilation launched by Germany are core motifs in the first episodes. Dominant themes in the years after 1945 are the emerging Cold War, new sources of conflict such as in the Middle East and the process of decolonization in Africa. The end of the story is the year 1962, in which the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) fought for Algeria’s independence from the colonial power France.

International team for balance in the interpretation of history
The series’ claim to multi-perspective is also manifested in the diverse, international team of creatives, historians and editors from Belgium, China, Germany, France, Great Britain, Israel, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Russia and Switzerland , Serbia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary and the USA. The film was shot in the characters’ original language, i.e. German, English, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian. With “The Division of the World: 1939-1962”, the joint production by ARTE, SWR, ORF and the Czech broadcaster CT continues the format of the successful and award-winning transnational documentary drama series “14 – Diaries of the First World War” (2014) and “War of Dreams – 1918-1939” (2018).
