Sharp increase in fines for “small” speeding tickets: why are there twice as many as five years ago?

The number of fines imposed on drivers driving between one and ten kilometers per hour too fast has doubled in Belgium in five years, the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reported on Friday.

During the first half of last year, almost 2 million fines were imposed on drivers exceeding the speed limit by a maximum of 10 km/h. This represents a 47.5% increase compared to the same period in 2021 and a fivefold increase compared to just under a million fines recorded in the first six months of 2018.

“There are indeed a lot more controls”analyse-t-on chez Vias. “These are often so-called minor offences. I was driving ‘only’ 2 kilometers per hour too fast, say the drivers, but you have to set a limit. In addition, it is always regarding corrected speeds”, underlines the road safety institute.” In practice, these 2 km / h actually correspond to an excess of 9 km / h.” These “minor offences” additional ones bring the State more than 40 million additional euros.
