Tomas Hertl scored a hat trick, the Sharks overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period and defeated the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime on Tuesday.
William Eklund played the hero with just four seconds left in overtime. He scored his sixth goal of the season to give the Sharks just their seventh victory this season.
Quebecer Julien Gauthier scored his first goal of the campaign on Saturday during a clash with the Florida Panthers. Against the Sharks, Gauthier put the finishing touches on a trade with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Simon Holmstrom. He gave goalkeeper Kaapo Kahkonen no chance with a good, precise throw into the upper area.
Hertl responded less than three minutes later with his fifth goal of the season. Anthony Duclair collected an assist in the sequence.
The Islanders’ special teams then stood out. Brock Nelson gave the New York team the lead once more during a power play in the middle period.
During a penalty kill in the third period, Holmstrom didn’t just waste time deep in the Sharks’ territory. He skillfully spotted Mike Reilly coming from the point and he rattled the ropes for the first time in an Islanders uniform. He was playing a fourth game with the team that claimed him off waivers following he started the season with the Florida Panthers.
Ryan Pulock added to his team’s cushion with a powerful shot on the power play moments later to make it 4-1. Reilly and Pageau each obtained their second point of the match on the sequence.
Pulock, however, committed a turnover with less than 10 minutes to go and Kevin Labanc took the opportunity to make the red light shine and reduce the gap to two goals.
The Sharks tried everything following that. With the goalkeeper on the bench for a sixth player with four minutes remaining, Hertl inherited the puck at the mouth of the net to bring his team within one goal.
With 90 seconds left, the attacker completed his hat trick by taking advantage of a superb throw from William Eklund and he only had to push the puck into a gaping cage to force overtime. The Sharks’ three goals at the end of the period were scored in just 6 minutes 35 seconds.
At the very end of overtime, Noah Dobson beat Kahkonen, but his shot hit the post. On the restart, Eklund gave the Sharks victory and completed an improbable comeback.
Kahkonen finished the game with 33 saves while Sorokin allowed five goals on 32 shots.
