In a special festive atmosphere, the Embassy of Mexico in Abu Dhabi organized the Ibero-American Film Festival, which was held at Cinepolis Cinema at the Oasis Mall in Sharjah from June 24-28. The festival witnessed free screenings of films in Spanish, in cooperation with the Embassy of Spain, Cuba, Guatemala and Colombia. The first edition of this festival dealt with the issue of gender equality and women’s empowerment by showing cinematic works of successful women’s stories or films made by creative female directors. The highlight of the opening ceremony was Frida Still Life, directed by the famous Mexican director Paul Leduc, which sheds light on the life story of the late Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The opening ceremony was presided over by David Davila Stefan, Consul of Mexico to the UAE, and Alejandro Aguilera Garibai, CEO of Cinepolis Cinema, Mexico. The state.
In his opening speech, Stéphane invited the audience to watch the Spanish film “Mataharis” by Isiar Bolin, and the Cuban film “City in Red” by Rebeca Chavez; The Colombian film “Jericho” directed by Catalina Mesa, and the closing film “September, a silent cry” directed by Kenneth Muller from Guatemala.
Garibai pointed out that such festivals bridge the gap and bridge the distances between different cultures and introduce the public in the UAE to talents from Latin America.
On the sidelines of the opening ceremony, some artworks regarding Frida Kahlo by Emirati artist Sarah Al Balushi and Ecuadorean artist Marisol Grijalva were shown.
