You may have started the year 2024 by embarking on the famous challenge of Dry January, or going through the entire month of January without drinking a drop of alcohol. You may have done it for your health, to sleep better or to rest your liver. But there might be another, less thought-regarding motivation for sobriety: having better sex. By questioning the association between sex and alcohol, some claim moderation – even sobriety – as a condition for their sexual fulfillment.
Maria, a 32-year-old photographer, has chosen to drink little when she has sexual encounters. In particular, she became aware that the alcohol she might consume during her dates tended to numb his feelings. “As my experiences progressed, I realized that I struggled to have pleasure and orgasms. I quickly understood that following drinking, I didn’t feel my body. I decided to limit myself to two drinks maximum, otherwise I’m really beside myself, she explains. Once I went to an orgy at a friend’s house and there was a buffet with good wine. I started drinking and realized I had exceeded my limits. I still tried to sleep with people and I saw that it didn’t work. I said, “I’m sorry, but I’ll stop there. I’d rather go smoke a cigarette or stare at people!”
