Shar! Meta threads helped boost different app of the same name

With Threads, launched earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg clashed with Elon Musk, bringing his Twitter competitor into the fray. At the same time, the explosion of Threads brought a side effect that Meta perhaps did not foresee. This is because the intense search for the new application has given impetus to a namesake, Threads, a Slack competitor that has been part of the App Store since 2019 and accounted for around 880,000 downloads on iOS between July 6 and 12 alone, according to data from Data.ai.

Classified as “few downloads” before that time, this Threads (threads.com) became the 52nd most downloaded show on the App Store globally. In some European Union countries, such as Germany, Spain and Italy, it even managed to enter the top 10. This might be related to the fact that Meta’s app is not available in the European Union, and Meta has started to block people who try to access the service via VPN.

The company has added a badge to its homepage declaring that it is not associated with Instagram. On Twitter, you’ll find a similar notice. Zuckerberg’s app portal can be accessed at threads.net.

“We have no ties to Meta. But you are welcome to stay with us!” states the company profile.

Interestingly, the lesser-known Threads was co-founded by Rousseau Kazi, a former product manager at Facebook. And Meta used to operate a companion app to Instagram, confusingly also called Threads.
