Lately, she was in the 4th stage of cancer, and the divorce with her husband, Kurt Isvarienko, seems to have taken a toll on her.
Shannen Doherty: The unequal battle with cancer
In 2015 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2016, she came back into the limelight, revealing that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, requiring her to undergo eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Although 2017 saw a downturn, just a year later, she told The Associated Press that her volume indicators had “picked up.”
Two years later, in 2020, Doherty forcefully announced during an appearance on “Good Morning America” that her cancer had returned as breast cancer and was stage 4, meaning it had spread to other parts of her body beyond the original source of the tumor.
In the clip she uploaded to Instagram, Doherty talked regarding the metastatic stage of the cancer and explained that: “On January 12th the first round of radiation was done. My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic while a lot has happened in my life. I am lucky as I have great doctors. But that fear…the turmoil…the timing of it all…This is what cancer can look like.”
In the caption of another clip she posted earlier, Doherty wrote: “The video showed the procedure where the mask you have to wear during radiation to the brain is put on. My first radiation treatment was on January 12th. My fear is obvious. I’m extremely claustrophobic and there was a lot going on in my life at the time. I am lucky to have great doctors like Dr Amin Mirahdi and the amazing technicians at Cedar Sinai. But that fear… The disruption… The timing of everything happening… That’s the picture of cancer.”
The shock of Luke Perry’s death

“There’s a special kind of love that they have for each other when we’ve been going through the journey that we’ve taken on 90210 and of course in life. Luke and I were working on our own show ideas. We wanted to work together once more and create something special and meaningful for our fans at this stage in our lives,” says Doherty characteristically, adding, “I will miss him every day, every minute, every second.”
Doherty recalls that during their time together, Luke Perry spoke fondly of his two children, 21-year-old Jack and 18-year-old Sophie, who he had with Rachel Sharp. “Luke loved his family. He was talking regarding his children and how proud he was of them. He showed me videos of them very often. It was his whole life, his greatest achievement.”
A few weeks before his death, Doherty went out for dinner with her best friend and his dog, Penny, which will stick in her mind as her last memory of Perry. “In February, we met for lunch. He chose a pet-friendly restaurant for his dog,” says Doherty.
“I walked over and saw him there, smiling with his dog Penny laying under the table,” says the actress. “I will never forget, and miss, Luke looking at me with that smile and calling me ‘San’.”
