The prestigious and eagerly awaited, as every year, ranking of the best higher education institutions in the world has fallen. This is the Shanghai ranking, produced since 2003 by the independent firm Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, and coveted by all universities in the world.
In Morocco, too, the ambition to be able to be included in the medium term constitutes a leitmotif for the success of the reform of the education system. The 2022 edition of this ranking has therefore just been revealed. To do this, more than 2,500 establishments were examined to select the first 1,000.
“Almost unsurprisingly”, American universities continue to dominate the top of the Top 100. For the 20th year, Harvard is in first place in this ranking where Anglo-Saxon establishments once more dominate the top ten places.
As proof, eight American and two British universities occupy the top of this 2022 edition. Harvard is thus once once more ahead of its compatriot Stanford. This year, another American university, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), took third place on the podium, relegating the British Cambridge to fourth position.
Then come the American universities Berkeley (5th) and Princeton (6th) then the British Oxford (7th). A total of 39 US universities are in the top 100.
On the side of France, four establishments remain there. The first non-Anglo-Saxon establishment with its 16th place, the University of Paris-Saclay lost, for its part, three places compared to the 2021 ranking.
Three other French universities appear in this list, although they have also dropped a few places compared to last year: PSL University (Paris Science and Letters), which brings together several higher education establishments including the École Normale Supérieure (ENS ), in 40th place, the Sorbonne (43rd) and the University of Paris Cité (78th).
It should be noted that the eight French universities appearing in the Top 200 are all labeled IdEx (Initiatives of Excellence) or ISITE (Initiatives Science-Innovation-Territories-Economy). It should also be noted that no Arab or African country appears in the Top 100 of the Shanghai ranking.
As a reminder, the latter takes into account six criteria, including the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields medals -considered the Nobel of mathematics- among graduate students and professors, the number of most cited researchers in their respective disciplines or the number of publications in the journals Science and Nature.
