On July 5, Elisabeth Staudinger, Member of the Management Board of Siemens Healthineers, visited Shanghai Electric’s headquarters, where she was received by Leng Weiqing, CEO of Shanghai Electric. A visit from Karim Amin, Executive Vice President of Siemens Energy, followed on the same day. During the meetings, Shanghai Electric held talks with senior officials from Siemens, its long-time partner in new energy and high-end medical equipment, to discuss the fruitful results of their collaboration that have driven innovation in China’s healthcare sector and explore opportunities improve their synergies in the development of greener solutions for energy storage and new energy sources.

Karim Amin acknowledged the remarkable achievements of the cooperation between Shanghai Electric and Siemens and gave insights into the business development of Siemens Energy. “Siemens Energy is committed to deepening strategic cooperation with Shanghai Electric to support China’s efforts to achieve the energy transition. This means that we will increase investment in R&D, actively explore new applications of new technologies, and provide better quality products and services. We bring more technical support to help China achieve the ‘Dual Carbon’ target faster, and we also expect to make more breakthroughs in new energy together with Shanghai Electric,” he said.

The visit comes following the first face-to-face government talks between the Chinese Premier and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz since the COVID-19 outbreak in June, during which the two countries’ representatives expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation on low-carbon development and the transition to accelerating towards a more climate-friendly economy. As Beijing and Berlin continue to work together on issues such as reducing industrial carbon emissions, doubling down on efforts to shift to climate-friendly mobility and building a circular economy, there will be new opportunities for the two companies to build on their twenty-year partnership, to drive innovation in renewable technologies and healthcare.

Since acquiring Westinghouse Electric more than two decades ago, Siemens has been a key partner of Shanghai Electric in the energy sector. The two companies are jointly developing clean, efficient power solutions in a joint venture, Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment. With a market share of 40 percent, the company has generated sales of over CNY 150 billion with its coal-fired power generation plants, which have set numerous records in terms of output, capacity and low carbon emissions.

2022 marks the start of a new partnership between Shanghai Electric and Siemens Healthineers, which the two companies will use to foster medical device innovation in China and improve access to quality medical resources for healthcare facilities across the country. The two companies have agreed on wide-ranging cooperation in various fields under an agreement covering business systems, product development and customer service to support Shanghai Electric’s growth in China’s booming medical sector.
