Shanghai: China has fined one of the country’s best-known comedian companies 14.7 million yuan (Rs 17.64 crore) for mocking the Chinese army (People’s Liberation Army). China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism Bureau said the company was fined following public criticism of a joke made by one of its comedians. Shanghai Xiaowu Culture Media Company was fined.

Chinese authorities said the incident illustrates what kinds of jokes are inappropriate at a time when performances such as stand-up comedy are increasingly popular. A fine of 1.3 crore yuan has been collected from the company. After Lee Hoshi’s program, the government confiscated 1.3 billion yuan the company earned as illegal income.

A live event in Beijing on May 13 went viral on Chinese social media.

Controversy came when Lee said he “had a good working style, could fight and win” while watching two stray dogs he adopted chasing a squirrel. This was the slogan used by President Xi Jinping in 2013 to praise the ethics of the Chinese military. This is what caused the complaint. Explaining that it was a mistake in organizing the event, the company canceled the contract with Lee.
