Shane McClanahan’s Left Forearm Injury: Updates from Top Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache

Shane McClanahan is headed to Los Angeles to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday to determine the severity of his left forearm injury. The lefty left his start Wednesday following just four innings of work due to “stiffness” in his forearm. The next day, he was placed on the disabled list.

Tampa Bay has yet to provide any updates on McClanahan’s condition, but considering that ElAttrache is one of the top-rated orthopedic surgeons in the industry, it suggests the Rays ace’s injury goes beyond just a nuisance.

That’s tough news for a Rays club that has had to deal with several major injuries to its pitchers this season.

McClanahan missed two weeks last month with a strained mid back. However, Tampa Bay still has a solid top of the rotation, with the trio of Tyler Glasnow, Zach Eflin and newly acquired Aaron Civale.

Reliever-turned-starter Zack Littell might be the most likely option to replace McClanahan. Left-hander Josh Fleming is also working on his comeback, having pitched four scoreless innings in a rehab start on Aug. 1 with Triple-A Durham.
