Rays ace Shane McClanahan is unlikely to return to the mound this season because of a left forearm injury, manager Kevin Cash told reporters Tuesday.
The injury to McClanahan, who leads the majors with a winning percentage of .846 and was named to his second All-Star Game last month, is a major casualty for a Rays team that entered Tuesday 3.0 games behind. Orioles in contention for first place in the AL East.
McClanahan met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday and will be evaluated next week by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas to determine if he will need surgery.
McClanahan is currently on the 15-day disabled list due to left forearm stiffness he experienced in the fourth inning of his start at Yankee Stadium last Wednesday. Cash said “everything is probably on the table” for McClanahan at this point, including Tommy John surgery, flexor surgery and a loose body removal procedure. The Rays hope to have more clarity following McClanahan meets with Dr. Meister.
“Surgery is an option, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself,” Cash said. “I think in fairness to Mac and to us, he’s going to be out for a while.”
The pitcher came out of his start last Wednesday once morest the Yankees following just four innings of work, in which he allowed five runs, in what was eventually his second loss of the year.
