Iranian and Iraqi sources said that Ali Shamkhani, Secretary General of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, will hold talks with senior officials in Baghdad today, before signing a security memorandum of understanding on the border between the two countries.

In turn, the official IRNA agency stated that Shamkhani’s visit aims to “preserve and develop trade relations to more than $10 billion with Iraq,” noting that this requires “lifting some security challenges imposed on the relations of the two countries, in order to expedite the implementation of economic agreements.” and facilitating banking cooperation.
And Baghdad is the second regional stop where Shamkhani stops following a lightning visit to Abu Dhabi, in the wake of the agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran to resume diplomatic relations. And Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote, in an article yesterday, that the agreement “may constitute the driving force for achieving regional stability, which is in the interest of the entire region.”
