Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Former Egyptian Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei described the moment Egyptian researcher Patrick Zaki arrived from his country at Milan Airport in Italy, following his release, as a “shameful scene.”
ElBaradei wrote, on his Twitter account, on Sunday: “A shameful and repeated scene! Unfortunately, we are the enemies of ourselves.”
On Wednesday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree pardoning Zaki and human rights lawyer Mohamed El-Baqer, following human rights criticism inside and outside Egypt.
The Egyptian president’s pardon was issued a day following an emergency court sentenced Zaki to 3 years in prison, due to an opinion article he published in 2019, in which he recounted his experience as an Egyptian Christian, and touched on discrimination.
Patrick Zaki was arrested upon his arrival from Italy to Egypt in 2020. Zaki was studying at the University of Bologna for a master’s degree.
