Shakira: the Casio watch that costs 10 times more than a Rolex – People – Culture

The separation of ex-soccer player Gerard Piqué and Shakira It has returned to be trends in social networks and the Internet. The famous composer and DJ Bizarrap collaborated with the Colombian singerwhere the artist dedicated her new song entirely to her ex-partner and his current girlfriend, the 22-year-old Clara Chía.

In this song, Shakira alludes –among other things– to her obsession with expensive watches. “You traded a Rolex for a Casio”, points out the singer, and refers to the legacy left by the Casio firm with its first watches, which were affordable and accessible models. While Rolex is a brand associated with luxury.

This event has made the term Casio a trend on Twitter, especially since many Internet users own a watch or a calculator of this brand. The company’s own Twitter account in Spain wanted to respond to Shakira’s song in a fun way.

“Today we get quite a few notifications for a mention of CASIO in a song. CASIO (watches and keyboards) and (calculators) belong to and for life,” they wrote in a tweet.

For them, Casio watches are for life. Is it a reference to the new relationship between Pique and Chia?

(We recommend: This would be the reaction of Clara Chía to the new song by Shakira and Bizarrap).

However, it must be said that, although Shakira’s lyrics are understandable, the truth is that we are not dealing with a low-level brand at all. Keep in mind that her watches, especially her ‘smartwatch’ models, can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. There are devices that are well over $7,000 in price.

And although, in general, Rolex watches usually cost much more than Casio’s, some models of the latter cost several times more.

According to the Omicrono technology portal, on the occasion of the celebration of Casio’s 35th anniversary in 2020, the Japanese company released an 18-carat gold-plated Casio G-Shock G-D5000-9JR model. It was born as a concept watch, but ended up being a sales edition. The ‘Pure Gold Edition’ watch came with solar charging, LED backlighting and Multi Band 6 technology.

It must be clarified, however, that this model was a limited edition of only 35 units for sale, which came to be worth 7.7 million yen in Japan, which would amount to almost US$65,000.

In contrast, we have the Oyster Perpetual, which is considered the cheapest Rolex in its entire catalog and can cost around US$6,000, that is, almost 10 times less than the Japanese model.
