In a remarkable development, authorities in the US state of Florida arrested Daniel John Valtier, 56 years old, on charges of stalking Shakira, when he arrived at her door with the intention of entering. According to him, he was in a relationship with the Colombian singer.
The alleged stalker claimed and repeated to the judge in court that Shakira is his wife and that he talks to her all the time.
The judge had already set the bail at $50,000, but after the defendant confirmed and insisted that he was the singer’s husband, the bail was raised to $100,000.
The judge also signed a restraining order so that the attacker could not contact the Colombian singer, through anyone else or through social media, except for court-ordered appearances.
The alleged stalker faces a harassment charge over social media posts about the singer and the delivery of sweets and homemade bottles of wine to her home between late December and early 2024, according to a police report.
The accused was arrested on Monday afternoon, January 8, after the authorities noticed that the pursuer had arrived at the singer’s house in a taxi. Foreign media reported that the man sent the Colombian artist “very disturbing” messages on social media as well.
For this reason, Shakira was forced to put the matter in the hands of her lawyer after she felt afraid, specifically for her two children, Sasha and Milano.
Shakira is not the only artist to face a situation of this kind. Another well-known case is the artist Taylor Swift, where the latter was surprised, on more than one occasion, by a stranger who sneaked into her house to try to get close.
