Patrick van Leeuwen came to the club in the summer of 2023 to replace Croatian coach Igor Jovicevic, who last season helped the club win gold medals in the Ukrainian championship and reach the ⅛ finals of the Europa League.

“FC Shakhtar officially announces the termination of the contract with head coach Patrick van Leeuwen. The coaching staff leaves the club together with the mentor. The Shakhtar football club expresses gratitude to Patrick van Leeuwen and his assistants for their professionalism and wishes them success and victories in the future!” — it says in a club statement.

Van Leeuwen’s successor has not yet been named.

The last match of the Dutch specialist was a strong-willed away victory over the Belgian Antwerp. In the second round of the group stage of the Champions League, the Ukrainian club lost after the first half with a score of 0:2, but managed to win in the second half (3:2).

In the Ukrainian Championship, Shakhtar is in third place after 10 rounds, losing two points to Kryvas and one point to Zhytomyr Polissya, having a match in hand.

54-year-old van Leeuwen previously worked as the head coach at Maccabi Tel Aviv and Zorya Luhansk, and also headed the Shakhtar academy for a long time.
