Raipur: The Shaheed Vir Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur will host the fourth Twenty20 cricket match between India and Australia. But with only hours left for the crucial match, the lack of electricity in some parts of the stadium is troubling the organizers. NDTV reported that the stadium’s electricity bill has not been paid since 2009.
Power to the stadium was cut five years ago due to arrears of Rs 3.16 crore. A temporary connection has now been provided following the request of the Chhattisgarh Cricket Association. But it’s only in the gallery and boxes. The floodlights are now decided to be powered by generators.
Raipur Rural Circle Incharge Ashok Khandelwal said that the cricket association secretary has applied to increase the capacity of the stadium’s temporary connection.
Current temporary capacity is 200 kV. Although the application to upgrade it to 1000 kV has been approved, the work has not started yet.
In 2018, the athletes participating in the half marathon staged a protest due to lack of electricity in the stadium. Chhattisgarh Sports Department and Public Works Department are blaming each other over the electricity bill. The electricity distribution company had issued notices to both the departments several times citing electricity dues, but the money was not paid.
The stadium has hosted three international cricket matches since the power cut in 2018. Electricity was supplied by a generator
