Due to factors such as the epidemic, rising US dollar interest rates and political corruption, Sri Lanka is mired in its worst economic crisis in 70 years. The Sri Lankan government declared the country bankrupt on the 5th, and there was a serious shortage of food and fuel that the people needed to live. The country’s presidential residence has been surrounded by hundreds of thousands of angry people in recent days, and the aerial footage is jaw-dropping.
It can be seen from the picture that a large number of demonstrators have already stormed the presidential residence. According to sources, Gotabaya Rajapaksa (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) had been evacuated from the port of Colombo on a warship before the demonstrators broke in. In addition, following the people stormed the official residence, the speaker of the country’s parliament announced that he had received a notice that Rajapaksa would officially step down on the 13th.
In the aerial footage, there were crowds of people around the official residence, and nearly 100,000 protesters who had long been complaining shouted in unison for the leader to step down. Although the security forces were reinforced and deployed, they were still unable to resist the angry people pouring in like a tidal wave. After breaking into the official residence, the demonstrators waved the national flag excitedly, or played in the swimming pool, or rested in the living room, and some even took a shower in the bathroom.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was not spared either. According to foreign media reports, protesters broke into his private home in Colombo and set it on fire, and sources alleged that Wickremisingh had been escorted to safety.
In response, Wickre Missinghe’s office issued a statement saying that the prime minister himself is willing to resign and will consult with several party leaders to decide what steps to take to deal with it.
