Sevilla fires coach Diego Alonso after loss to Getafe in the league

MADRID (AP) — Sevilla fired coach Diego Alonso because the team remains winless in the Spanish league under the Uruguayan following Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Getafe.

Sevilla made the announcement with a short statement shortly following the end of the match. The team is close to the relegation zone.

Under Alonso, Sevilla is winless in eight league games and lost all four of its Champions League games to finish last in its group. The Uruguayan arrived in October to replace José Mendilibar, who led the team to the Europa League title the previous season.

Sevilla’s only two wins with Alonso at the helm were once morest lower division rivals in the Copa del Rey.

Sevilla is 16th, but is tied on points with Celta de Vigo and Cádiz, which is 18th and is in the relegation zone.
