Severe Weather Terms You Should Know – Stay Safe During Florida’s Cold Front

A cold front expected to pass through Central Florida this Saturday might bring the threat of severe weather from late morning into the followingnoon.

The main threats appear to be lightning and wind gusts of 45 to 55 miles per hour (mph), but small hail and the development of a tornado cannot be ruled out.

The National Weather Service (NWS), in fact, has already placed the risk of severe weather at level 1 of 5 for most of the counties in the state of Florida, including those in the center.

It is important that you know the meteorological terms that the authorities use during an atmospheric phenomenon because they might save your life. Next, the terms.

  • Severe Storm Watch: conditions are favorable for the development of a severe storm. It requires preparation on your part.
  • Severe Storm Warning: when a severe storm is occurring or is imminent.
  • Tornado Watch: It is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. Persons located in and around the surveillance area should be vigilant.
  • Tornado warning: It is issued when radar detects a developing tornado or when there is a reliable report of its formation. A tornado watch is typically issued for parts of one or two counties, for an hour or less.
  • Flood Warning: Flooding is possible in your area. You must abandon or be prepared to go to higher ground immediately upon warning.
  • Flood Warning: When flooding is occurring or is imminent, a flood or flash flood warning will be issued. This is your notification that you need to seek shelter.
  • Flash Flood Warning: If you are under a flood or flash flood warning, seek shelter immediately. Move to higher ground or a higher level. However, don’t take shelter in an attic or other windowless room.
