Severe Weather in Belgium: Waterspouts and Flooding Cause Minimal Damage

2023-06-23 06:04:00

Waterspouts fell on Belgium on Thursday. Firefighters were strongly mobilized, mainly in the regions of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg. Fortunately, there was no major damage.

In the Liège region, 70 l/m² fell during the day in Battice, between Liège and Verviers. This corresponds to 7 buckets of 10 liters on each m² in your house. Due to this heavy rainfall, there were some overflows. Following the blockage of the drains, hundreds of roads were flooded all over Wallonia and in greater numbers in the provinces of Liège and Namur. But luckily there was no damage.

Some residents had water up to their ankles

This Friday morning, in the Liège region, there is not much left of these heavy rains which watered the region until late in the evening. “In Haccourt, there is mainly mud that has flowed in almost all the streets of this town sandbags also in front of the houses, in front of the vents to prevent rainwater from seeping into the houses. “explains this morning at 7 a.m. our journalist Romain Mayez on site for bel RTL.

At his side, a resident testifies to the situation. “It was very quick. In 5 minutes, the water rose to the level above the ankles. Now, fortunately, it was settled very quickly. Some inhabitants had water up to their ankles in their homes”, confides Emeline.

A “continuous flow” of calls for the firefighters of Liège

The Liège firefighters intervened 114 times in the late afternoon and evening for situations linked to precipitation. Operations stopped at midnight, they said on Friday morning. About fifteen interventions remain to be carried out this Friday and new damage caused by the bad weather must still be noted. The operations mainly concerned pumping out cellars and cutting down trees, as well as a few cases of tarping.

Firefighters were overwhelmed by a “continuous flow” of calls to number 1722 for non-urgent interventions, further indicated the dispatching of Liège.

The interventions also of the Luxembourg relief zone

In the south of the country, firefighters intervened around seventy times in the afternoon from 2:30 p.m., the Luxembourg rescue zone said at the end of the day. There is no major material damage. The interventions relate to falling trees, torn electric cables, water on the road or even cellar cleaning. Mudslides were observed in particular near Bouillon and Poupehan. The interventions mainly concerned the regions of La Roche, Paliseul, Saint-Hubert, Bertrix and Bouillon.

And in the province of Namur?

Finally, the firefighters of the province of Namur carried out around a hundred interventions due to bad weather. The area that has been most in demand is Dinaphi with 60 interventions: 15 in Rochefort, 10 in Dinant, 10 in Beauraing and 25 in Ciney. While the Val de Sambre zone received no calls relating to precipitation and wind, the NAGE zone received around fifty. These came mainly from Namur, but also from Andenne, Fernelmont and Eghezée.

The calls mainly concerned trees and branches fallen on the roads, flooded roads and pumping operations. Overall, the situation was handled smoothly.

In Namur, the North tunnel had to be closed from the start of the afternoon in the direction of Saint-Servais. And a work of art recently installed near the Watchtower, on the site of the citadel, was broken by the wind. However, there is no danger because the structure remains stable, said the NAGE area on this subject.
