From Tuesday night, thunderstorms can be expected in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Storm gusts of up to 120 km/h can occur. On Wednesday evening, the storms will also reach the east and south-east.

The sunny weather is coming to an abrupt end in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. From Tuesday night, thunderstorms can be expected in western Austria. Heavy rain and squalls are also to be expected. A storm or severe weather warning was issued in Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

In Tyrol, thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusts of wind of up to 120 km/h can be expected throughout the state, especially on Wednesday followingnoons. The warning level “Orange” is the second highest level of the four-level scale, announced GeoSphere Austria and the state of Tyrol. The population was asked to be careful.

First thunderstorm Tuesday night

An approaching cold front is responsible for this. The first thunderstorms with high lightning activity and gusts of wind of up to 100 km/h are expected to set in as early as Tuesday night. The northern parts of the districts of Reutte, Innsbruck-Land, Schwaz and Kufstein in the border area with Bavaria are said to be affected. The situation is expected to calm down on Wednesday morning, but heavy thunderstorms are expected to start once more in the followingnoon at the latest. Heavy rain across the board with up to 50 liters per square meter was expected until Thursday night. The whole of Tyrol should be affected.

The population was asked to exercise caution. During a storm, forests and parks should therefore be avoided and outdoor activities should be avoided if possible. Movable objects in the open air must be secured, it said.

Heavy rain in Vorarlberg

In Vorarlberg, too, a striking cold front will interrupt the heat wave on Wednesday with storms. While 35 degrees were still measured in Feldkirch on Tuesday, gusts of wind with speeds of up to 120 km/h are predicted for Wednesday followingnoon. The heavy rain is likely to reach 30 to 50 liters per square meter. The state warning center named the border area with Germany, the Lake Constance area and the Bregenzerwald as the most affected areas on Wednesday night, from Wednesday noon storms are to be expected throughout the state.

Although the forecast amounts of precipitation should not cause any problems for the rivers in Vorarlberg, in individual cases there might be local overloading of the sewage system and flooding of streets, cellars and underground car parks. Observing the development of precipitation and water levels in the streams was recommended.

Heavy rain showers and thunderstorms can also occur in the east and south-east on Wednesday evening and during the night. Until the followingnoon it is still mostly sunny and hot with up to 34 degrees. (APA/ed.)
