Carinthia was hit particularly hard by thunderstorms on Wednesday evening. Huge hailstones fell in the Spital district, and fallen trees caused disabilities. There were also several mudslides.
Klagenfurt/Graz – A violent storm led to numerous fire brigade operations in Upper Carinthia on Wednesday evening. The Spittal district was particularly affected: in the area between Rennweg am Katschberg and Gmünd, several mudflows went off and near Lurnfeld hailstones up to eight centimeters in size and fallen trees caused disabilities, the police said. In the Liezen district, the fire brigades were deployed because of uprooted trees and covered roofs.
At Rennweg in Carinthia, a mudslide went down the L19 at 5:35 p.m. Residents and the crew of a police patrol were locked between several debris flows, the L19 was no longer passable. A mudslide also went down Katschberg Straße (B99) in St. Nikolai, where the sliding door of a bus was smashed by a stone, nobody was injured. In Kremsbrücke, two houses were badly damaged, and a car was almost completely buried by a mudslide.
Several mudslides caused rescue workers to be deployed in the hospital area.

The roads in the storm area remained closed, and the closure is expected to last until Thursday morning. Several trees were uprooted or snapped and thrown over the roadway along the B99, and several streams burst their banks. According to the latest findings, no one was injured, but there was enormous property damage.
Stormy gusts and huge hailstones
Numerous storm operations were also reported from the Drautal. Hailstones five to eight centimeters in size fell in the municipality of Lurnfeld, traffic on the Drautalstraße (B100) came to a complete standstill. Due to the stormy gusts, countless trees were uprooted along the Drautalstraße, some of which blocked the roadway.

There was also an operation at Lake Millstatt. There, a 31-year-old foil surfer was spotted in the middle of the lake by water rescue and fire brigade and rescued from distress at sea because of the storm and brought to shore.
According to the state fire brigade association, there was an increased number of operations in Styria, mainly in the Liezen and Leoben districts. In the Liezen district, the fire brigades were deployed 35 times, especially in the Ennstal and the Paltental. 280 emergency services from around 20 fire brigades had to remove trees that had fallen on roads and vehicles, pump out flooded cellars and temporarily cover roofs damaged by hail (Edlach) with tarpaulins. There were also debris flows, such as on the B75 between Donnersbach and Donnersbachwald, where a distance of 200 meters was affected, as the Liezen fire brigade command announced on Thursday. (WHAT)
