Blocked railway lines in Swabia

The severe thunderstorms have also led to numerous operations by the fire brigade and police in Swabia. Numerous trees had fallen, said the police headquarters in Swabia South/West and North. There were power outages in some communities. Construction fences were also flown through the air, used clothes containers and unsecured trailers “made themselves independent,” said the spokesman for the police headquarters in Swabia North. In the southwest of Swabia alone, there were well over 500 operations, according to a police spokesman.

The Ulm-Augsburg-Munich route is currently completely closed on the train. Disabilities also occur on the Munich-Memmingen-Lindau, Memmingen-Ulm, Kempten-Buchloe-Augsburg and Augsburg-Schwabmünchen routes. According to the railway, the route near Kisslegg in the Ravensburg district is closed. The overhead line between Hergatz and Lindau has been damaged and needs to be repaired. Rail traffic between Hergatz and Lindau Island has therefore been suspended. The extent of the storm damage is currently being recorded, and delays and partial cancellations are to be expected, according to the railway.

Several missions in Lower Bavaria

The storm front did not stop at Lower Bavaria – the police and fire brigade had to move out around 100 times in the region. As a spokesman for the operations center in Straubing said, fallen trees or traffic signs were often the cause of problems. In addition, several power outages were registered: for example, in Grafentraubach in the Straubing-Bogen district, in Oberotterbach in the Landshut district and in some cases in Osterhofen in the Deggendorf district, the power was gone.

The Upper Palatinate is also affected

According to a police spokesman, there were also almost a hundred operations in the Upper Palatinate – because of fallen trees and minor accidents caused by branches flying around on the road. In Auerbach in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach and in Altenthann in the district of Regensburg, residential buildings were struck by lightning, which is why the fire brigade had to be deployed here as well. A police spokesman said there were no major fires.

Lake Constance region particularly affected

However, the Lake Constance region was hit particularly hard – as were Sigmaringen and Ravensburg. A police spokesman in Ravensburg had already stated in the evening that the operational situation was not manageable because emergency calls were constantly being received. Injuries were not initially reported, but instead many trees were knocked down and roofs were covered.

Several injured in Upper Bavaria

A lot of damage is also reported from Upper Bavaria. In the area of the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria North alone, there were around 350 storm-related emergency calls during the night. In the district of Traunstein there were over 150.

In Olching, a tree fell on a house, another on a caravan. Two people were injured, one seriously. In Fürstenfeldbruck, a 39-year-old pedestrian was slightly injured by a falling tree. He also had to be treated in a hospital. The police also report traffic accidents caused by fallen trees. In Aichach, a 19-year-old drove his car into a tree across the B 300. He and his 16-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries.

A horse from Weyarn did not survive the storm night. As reported by the Holzkirchen motorway police, the frightened animal fled from its yard and got between the two central barriers of the A 8. It was tied there around 5 a.m. Because the horse was badly injured while escaping, it had to be euthanized on the spot.

Path of devastation in Saarland

Significant damage is also reported from Saarland: In Asweiler in the municipality of Freisen (St. Wendel district), the storm developed considerable destructive power and raged in an aisle of around 100 meters, as the police situation center announced. 50 buildings were damaged. The head of the local civil protection, Dirk Schäfer, assumed a tornado. A large contingent of fire brigades, THW and police were deployed.

Storms raged first in France

The storm front hit France first: gusts of wind with a speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour were registered in Dijon and Mulhouse. The French railways stopped traffic on some routes for safety reasons. The ceiling of a supermarket collapsed in Dijon and dozens of trees were uprooted in Vichy. Residents of the region shared photos of large hailstones falling with the storm gusts.

Swiss woman is struck by lightning

Swiss weather services reported tens of thousands of lightning strikes by Wednesday morning. SRF Meteo spoke of more than 70,000 lightning bolts across the country, Meteonews Switzerland of more than 50,000. In the canton of Fribourg, a woman was struck by lightning and seriously injured.
