Severe Storms in Styria: Updates, Forecast, and Events

2023-06-23 15:19:00

As forecast, Styria was actually heading for severe storms on Friday followingnoon. For large parts of Liezen, Murau, Murtal, Leoben, Bruck-Mürzzuschlag, Voitsberg, Graz area and Weiz, the storm warning center issued a concrete alarm in the morning. In parts of the districts there were rain showers and hail from noon. Whereby: The north should get off lightly this time.

In between, Graz was threatened with particularly heavy precipitation – the city was surrounded by two thunderstorm cells, the Geosphere said was Styria. But things turned out differently: The gusts of wind in and around the state capital reach 70 kilometers per hour and more – and most of the thunderstorm cells disappeared.

Nevertheless, around 3 p.m. and shortly before 4.30 p.m., small thunderstorm cells continued to form, while hail fell in the Deutschlandsberg area and a little later also in the Feldbach area. Rainfall will continue to shift towards the southeast and south as the followingnoon progresses.

Can the USI festival take place?

The big question in the state capital: Can the legendary USI festival with up to 25,000 guests take place in the open air at the university sports institute on Friday evening? “Yes, by then the thunderstorms should have passed, light rain is also possible for a short time followingwards,” says Geosphere meteorologist Christian Pehsl. This should secure the student mega event in the first edition following the Corona break. Organizer Hannes Schalk also confirmed this to the Kleine Zeitung. The cloverleaf run also takes place – not for the first time in the rain.

But before that, things were getting hectic in parts of Styria: In Übelbach, the fire brigade continues to warn of danger to life on the banks of the stream, the water levels are constantly rising.

In Graz, the Schlossbergbahn failed because of the wind. The Carinthian antenna also reports that it is also hailing on the southern autobahn (A 2) on the Pack: “Some drivers are staying in the tunnels. Please be particularly careful.” In the north of the Graz area, in Frohnleiten and in the Fischbacher Alps, the highest amount of precipitation was measured up to 2 p.m. – 31 liters each within one hour, up to 4 p.m. it was even 50. On the Schöckl, the amount of rain rose to 60 liters within a maximum of two hours .

Between Thörl and Aflenz there were also power outages for a good two hours, as reported by Energie Steiermark – several stations have failed here. The fire brigade in the Vorau area also had to move out to several pumping operations due to flooding. Similar in the north of Graz area.

The storms were caused by a cold front, which means the end of the first heat wave this summer. According to Geosphere, rain is therefore possible throughout Styria until the evening. The meteorologists also warn of lightning strikes, objects whirling around and broken branches of trees until 9 p.m. due to gusts of wind.

After the forecast thunderstorms, it will be more stable from Friday: “Then only isolated rain showers are possible in Upper Styria,” says Pehsl. In the north, the temperatures reach around 20 degrees, in Graz and in the south 25 degrees with changeable but also sunny conditions. Sunday will then be more summery – with around 25 degrees across the country and lots of sun. Monday looks similar, on Tuesday it will be rainy once more from today’s perspective.
