The Mediterranean coast of Spain, in particular the Balearic archipelago, was plagued on Sunday by strong winds and heavy rains which caused several minor injuries, substantial material damage and disrupted air traffic.

Gusts reaching up to 120 km/h, waterspouts or sometimes hail fell mainly on the Balearic Islands, but also in Catalonia and in the region of Valencia, all three partially placed in orange vigilance (significant risk ), Sunday, by the National Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Falling trees and flooded streets were observed in several points of these three Mediterranean regions.

Twenty-four flights canceled

The wind also broke the moorings of a 330m tourist cruise ship moored in Palma, on the island of Mallorca, moving it until it collided with a moored tanker, causing six minor injuries, indicated the Balearic Port Authority.

In addition, 24 flights were canceled and 29 diverted in the archipelago on Sunday, announced the manager of Spanish airports.

The Aemet maintained its orange alert on Monday for a small part of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, and yellow (lower risk) for Tuesday. This meteorological episode, accompanied by a drop in temperatures, comes shortly following the fourth wave of summer heat experienced by Spain and which ended on Thursday.
