Severe Storm Causes Chaos in Amsterdam Airport – Find Updates and Cancellations

2023-07-05 08:18:00

Airplanes can hardly land or take off at Amsterdam Airport due to strong gusts of wind (100-120 km/h), rain and poor visibility. According to the airport spokeswoman, the number of cancellations represents around a fifth of all flights scheduled at Schiphol for the day. She said the number of canceled flights might increase further. The train operator NS in turn interrupted train traffic throughout the northern part of the Netherlands.

Damage, highway closed, one dead following falling tree

The Rijkswaterstaat also recommends only taking the motorway in red alert areas. “We see the storm building up. Trees were felled on the A9 near Uitgeest and fell onto the road,” the road traffic body’s spokeswoman said.

A truck also overturned on this same highway, due to high winds. Access was therefore closed. Peaks of up to 1446 km / h were recorded in the morning.

Several damages are to be deplored in the country, schools have also had to close and the inhabitants are called upon to stay at home. The authorities fear that the emergency number is overloaded.

In Haarlem, near Amsterdam, a 51-year-old woman died following a tree fell on her car. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Bending under the gusts, a large tree hit the vehicle where the lady was in the passenger seat. She was resuscitated by bystanders at first, then taken to hospital before dying from her injuries. The driver is not injured.

Before hitting the Netherlands, storm Poly had hit northern France on Tuesday, causing extensive damage from Normandy to Pas-de-Calais. The wind blew at more than 100 km / h in places, and rain equivalent to several weeks of precipitation fell, especially in Paris where small floods formed.

In Pas-de-Calais, gusts at 125 km / h were recorded.

Code yellow in Belgium

Should we fear the same thing in Belgium? The MRI has extended the yellow code in all Flemish provinces – except Flemish Brabant – until 1 p.m. It provides gusts of up to 70 km / h.

The disturbance should then move towards Germany.
