Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz suffered a severe fall in Stage 1 of the 2023 Tour de France and one of them had to leave the competition. The unfortunate situation demonstrated the cruelty of cycling, since everything happened a couple of hours following the Tour began.

With just over 22 kilometers to go before the finish line, Richard Carapaz, members of EF, Rigoberto Urán’s team, and Enric Mas, from Movistar, suffered a severe fall. They were going downhill and a curve caused them to collide. Immediately, Carapaz and Mas tried to get up, but they were slow to get back up and, in fact, one of them abandoned the competition.

Although his knees were bloody and the pain was evident, Richard Carapaz continued in the competition and finished Stage 1 of the Tour de France. Unfortunately, Enric Mas suffered a major problem in his right arm and, following discussing it with his team, he left the Tour. The departure of Mas is not only a very hard blow for the Movistar Team, but also for the competition, since he was one of the contenders for the podium in the general classification.
