  • Regional authorities reported that they have activated surveillance efforts for possible new rainfall that may occur in the state.

The rains recorded in the early hours of Tuesday, July 16 in the state of Portuguesa caused the Guanare River to overflow, causing flooding in several sectors of the state.

Daniel Márquez, director of Civil Protection in Portuguesa, reported that at least 11 areas were affected by the rainfall. He said that producers and farmers lost their crops due to the increase in the river flow. Some of the most affected towns are the municipalities of Guanare, Papelón and Biscucuy.

Márquez said that the water level of the Guanare River has dropped, but the early warning system is still in place in nearby villages and municipalities to prevent any emergency situation due to possible new rainfall.

Authorities received a report of a family that was isolated due to the flooding of the Guanare River.

On Wednesday, July 17, Márquez confirmed that two adults and a four-year-old child were rescued following rescue efforts by Civil Protection officials.

Daniel Márquez said that the sectors of Polvorín, Desembocadero, Las Cruces, as well as several in the lower area of ​​the Guanare municipality such as Gato Negro, Los Playones, Los Tumbos, Morita and San Andrés are the most vulnerable to the rains.

Rain forecast in Venezuela

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) Rain is forecast for Wednesday July 17 in several states of Venezuela.

The agency indicated that the transit of tropical wave number 22, which goes from the center to the west of the country, together with the activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, will cause rainfall that is estimated to be more intense following noon.

During the morning, rain is expected in Essequibo, Bolívar, Amazonas, Apure, Sucre, Guárico, Aragua, Carabobo, Táchira, Mérida and Zulia.
