Security officials arrested several citizens after the new day of protests that took place on Saturday, August 17.

Gonzalo Himiob, vice president of the Penal Forum, denounced on X (formerly Twitter) the arrest of Alexander Gómez, a human rights defender, in Puerto Ayacucho, Amazonas. Gómez was arrested along with other people, whose identity is still unknown.

On the other hand, in the state of Zulia, the priest Elvis Cabarques de Machiques was also arrested. He was released hours later.

While Vente Venezuela reported on the arrest of the deputy of the Legislative Council of Carabobo, Carlos Molina, in Valencia (Carabobo).

Users on social networks reported in X In Maracay, Aragua state, GNB officers arrested a man in one of their vehicles. The identity of the person is still unknown.

The video shows the man trying to free himself from the military officer, while people in the background shout “Freedom” and ask the detainee for his name. Another person can also be seen being detained on one of the GNB motorcycles.

More than 1,400 people arrested between July 29 and August 17

Between July 29 and August 17, the Penal Forum has counted a total of 1,416 people detained. Among those deprived of liberty are 126 adolescents, 14 indigenous people, 17 people with disabilities and 188 women.

The NGO also indicated in a publication by X that 58 people have been released during this period.

On the other hand, among the states with the highest number of arrests are the Capital District, with 241; Carabobo, with 194, and Anzoátegui, with 113.

The NGO’s figures contrast with those of the Venezuelan government, which, as of August 15, counted 2,400 people arrested during the post-election protests. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, 25 deaths were recorded.
