The AirPods Pro 2 will soon be enriched with several interesting new features, including an adaptive audio mode. This merges Transparency and Active Noise Reduction modes depending on the conditions the user is in. The objective is ” to offer him the best possible experience at the moment T “Explains Apple in its press release.

Disturbing noises will be automatically reduced (work, tools) to better immerse the wearer in its content, but Apple promises that we can still interact with its environment in good conditions. This goes through a conversation detection function, which will lower the volume if you ever start chatting with someone you meet on the street. Ambient noise will be reduced, while the microphones will pick up the voice of your interlocutor to increase it.

A Custom Volume feature will use machine learning to adjust the sound to your environment. For example, it can reduce loud ambient sounds during a phone call so that you can concentrate on your call. This new Adaptive Audio mode can be activated from the Control Center: it will be next to the Transparency and Noise Reduction modes on iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. Apple also promises that automatic switching between multiple devices will be improved on the AirPods Pro 2, with reduced latency.

If all these new features are interesting, they will remain reserved… for AirPods Pro 2. Even the very expensive AirPods Max will not be entitled to them, which is quite surprising given the price of the device (629 €) which has not dropped since its release. The headset will also be deprived of the new function to invoke Siri without having to say “Hey Siri”, which is currently only available in English.

These limitations are explained by the fact that the AirPods Pro 2 have an H2 chip, where the AirPods Max have “only” two H1 chips. Owners of AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Max will get only one new feature: a function to mute their microphone by pressing the stem of their headphones (or the digital crown of AirPods Max). These new features will be rolled out in a future update for AirPods, coming in firmware currently in beta.
