A fire in an apartment in an apartment building in Wiener Neustadt caused several injuries on Saturday night. According to the volunteer fire brigade, eight people were treated on the spot following inhaling smoke gas, three of whom were taken to the hospital. The operation was difficult for the helpers because the affected apartment on the second floor of the building was “massively littered”.
The Wiener Neustadt volunteer fire department was alerted on Friday at around 11:15 p.m. Clear smoke was already visible when approaching the property, it said in a broadcast. Several residents were rescued from the heavily smoky apartment building – some with the help of special escape masks, thanks to which those affected were supplied with fresh air via the firefighters’ air tank. A cat was also brought to safety.
The extinguishing work was demanding. “Our respiratory protection squads first had to make their way through mountains of rubbish in order to be able to fight the fire effectively throughout the apartment. Due to the huge amount of rubbish in the apartment, the fire was able to spread so quickly throughout the apartment,” reported operations manager Christian Pfeiffer. In order to be able to extinguish all the embers, the apartment finally had to be cleared out.
The fire was prevented from spreading to the roof truss or other parts of the building. The Wiener Neustadt volunteer fire brigade was challenged with a dozen emergency vehicles and 43 members for around three hours. The Red Cross and the Samaritan Association as well as the police were also deployed.
