At least two people have died and 200 houses have been destroyed by the effect of several earthquakes, one of them of 5.3 degrees, which have shaken the department of Nippes, in southern Haiti, on Monday, according to the latest balance offered by Civil Protection. The agency has reported that one of the people has lost his life in Anse-à-Veau, where several houses and its main road have been affected, while another person has died in Fond des Blancs. In this context, the earthquake has left several people with minor injuries in the district of Miragoâne.
The United States Geological Survey has recorded the first earthquake this Monday near the city of Les Cayes, west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Shortly following, two followingshocks of 4.4 and 5.1 degrees of magnitude, respectively, have been recorded.
On August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook southern Haiti, leaving at least 2,200 dead and more than 690,000 people affected. Haiti is still recovering from the violent 2010 earthquake that plunged the country into a state of emergency.
From the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moise, on July 7, the always turbulent political and economic situation in Haiti was hit even harder. Soon the power vacuum degenerated into a security crisis, with daily murders and kidnappings, especially in large areas of the capital.
