Several dozen garages on fire in Verviers: the fire is under control

Sixty garages burned this Saturday evening rue Octave Pétry in Verviers. 35 firefighters from the Vesdre-Hoëgne-Plateau area intervened on site with three pumpers, two tank trucks and a self-ladder. It was necessary to bring in a cistern from civil protection and firefighters from the DG zone.

“There are no longer any risks of extension” of the disaster announced the firefighters of the VHP zone. “The operations will nevertheless last for some time.”

The origin of the fire remains unknown. About seventy garages are enclosed in a block of houses at the site of the disaster. The wind quickly spread the flames from garage to garage. Only a row of boxes was spared. Firefighters evacuated residents of nearby buildings.

The fumes were particularly acrid in the neighborhood “because of the contents of the garages” explained to us a man of fire, “It’s not just cars and their fuel, it’s also furniture, tires and whatever people can pile up.” No one appears to have been injured.
