The Togolese Armed Forces (FAT) reported “several deaths” in “coordinated and complex attacks” perpetrated by armed individuals overnight from Thursday to Friday in the Savanes region, in the far north of Togo, according to a statement released Saturday by the Togolese army.
“Unidentified armed individuals carried out coordinated and complex attacks in several villages located in the Kpendjal and Kpendjal-Ouest prefectures in the savannah region,” the statement said.
“Unfortunately, this attack left several dead and a few injured,” the statement added.
According to the document, a FAT detachment quickly dispatched to the scene of the attacks “made it possible to stop the murderous madness of these individuals and to limit the loss of human life and material damage”.
In another statement released on Saturday, the government condemned in the strongest possible terms what it called “cowardly, heinous and criminal acts” perpetrated in the Savanes region, which has been plagued by terrorist attacks for several months.
The Togolese government has announced that it will take “new measures to strengthen the security of people and property”, as part of the state of security emergency in force since last June in this region of the far north of the country. .
