After the launch of Season 2, it seems that some information regarding the first expansion of Diablo 4 is already in the game files. Dataminers looked at what was new and came across some interesting clues.
What’s new in the Diablo 4 expansion?
In addition to new seasons and free updates, Diablo 4 must also offer paid expansions. One of them is planned for 2024 and here is what the dataminers found regarding it:
This extension should be titled “Lord of Hatred“: a nickname which is that of Mephisto, the father of the antagonist Lilith, The story should apparently return to regions of Diablo 2, more precisely to Kurast, the capital of Kehjistan. This is where we might find Mephisto in Diablo 2. new class would be called “Spiritborn”. There are also hints of a mercenary system, raids, and runewords that were supposed to already be in the game upon release.
Since data mining is never completely reliable, this new information should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. However, the Mephisto theme has already been declared probable by experts.
Mephisto at the center of the expansion?
Due to the connection to Lilith and the end of Diablo 4’s campaign, a reunion with the Great Evil seems plausible. The connection to Kehjistan has also already been mentioned, since Meshif appears in the Diablo 4 story.
Plus, with Diablo 4, Blizzard is going in the “before” direction anyway and trying to bring back the feeling of Diablo 1 and 2. So it would be appropriate if for nostalgia’s sake there were reunions with contents of old sections.
But it is also possible that it is simply deleted content. Since Mephisto is in the game anyway and runes were also planned, it is possible that remnants were found here and not future content.
Paladin in Diablo 2
The biggest question mark in these new indications concerns the “Spiritborn” class. There have already been many rumors and thoughts regarding this new class, but two theories were the most plausible so far:
a crusader or a paladin, there will be some sort of occultist/demon summoner or a blood knight like in Diablo Immortal.
The main argument for a “dark” class was that it would fit into Lilith’s history. A paladin/crusader would fill the gap of both a holy class and a shield bearer.
