ALGIERS – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced, Thursday in a press release, the taking of several anticipatory and preventive measures at the local and regional levels in order to protect agricultural centers in the southern regions once morest the risks of locust invasion next fall.

Algeria experienced, at the end of May and throughout June, the arrival of swarms of migratory locusts via its southwest borders via Tindouf, which were advancing towards places suitable for summer breeding. , namely Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Chad, the press release said.

Initially, the specialized services of the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by the National Institute of Plant Protection (INPV), had taken all the necessary preventive measures to protect the agricultural centers of the southern regions, in particular through the treatment of more than 2,500 hectares infested by locusts in Tindouf, Béchar, Beni Abbès and Adrar, according to the same source.

The minister affirmed in his press release that he had taken several anticipatory measures at the local and regional levels to avoid any risk of locust invasion during the fall of 2023.

As for the measures initiated at the regional level, Algeria contributed, within the framework of the action plan put in place, to the terrestrial and aerial exploration carried out by two experts, using drones on the scene. of summer breeding in Mauritania, since July 12.

This measure was taken following the organization of a workshop in Oran and Algiers from June 5 to 9, 2023 by the Commission to Combat the Desert Locust, which Algeria currently chairs, according to the press release.

At the local level, a proactive emergency plan was put in place to ensure in particular the training, exploration and control aspects, through the organization, at the end of July, of several training sessions on the techniques exploration and fight once morest locust risk for the benefit of 62 executives from the regional structures of the INPV and agricultural services of Adrar, Timimoun, Bechar, Beni Abbès, Tindouf, Naâma, Tamanrasset, In Guezzam, Illizi and Djanet.

Equipped with all the necessary means of control and pesticides, five exploration teams will be dispatched to the site in two stages, as part of the practical exploration and monitoring plan.

The first stage will take place in mid-September in the summer breeding regions, near the border areas of the extreme south of Algeria, before supporting these teams with others specialized in terrestrial and aerial exploration at the mid-October of the same year.

Furthermore, the ministry reported several modern technological means now used in the exploration system, such as satellite images, in collaboration with the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL), to inquire regarding plant cover, in addition of several weather forecast sites used by the INPV to guide exploration teams.
