ALGIERS – Several activities and events are scheduled next Saturday across the national territory, on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, celebrated on June 17 of each year, said Thursday a press release from the General Directorate of forests (DGF).

In this context, the DGF will organize, as the national focal point of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Algeria (UNCCD), a day of awareness and information on desertification and drought through the 58 wilayas, followed by an exhibition of products from the land made by women, specifies the same source.

Also, an evaluation of the progress of the green dam project will be done at the level of the 13 wilayas of the green dam, two years following the launch of the national initiative for the restoration of the green dam, adds the press release.

In addition, a study day on plant species to be planted in the green dam area will be held on June 17 at the National Institute of Forest Research (INRF), according to the same source.

Algeria, like other countries in the world, will celebrate this year the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought under the slogan “Woman, her land, her rights”.

The DGF underlined, in this sense, the vital role of women in the health of the land, adding that several major obstacles however encounter women in guaranteeing their land rights, which “limits their chances of flourishing and prospering. And when land degrades and water becomes scarce, women are often the most affected.”

The management thus considers in its press release that “investing in women’s equal access to land and the property associated with it is to invest directly in their future and in that of humanity”, affirming that “It’s time to propel women and girls to the forefront of global land restoration and drought resilience efforts.”

Securing women’s land rights can help, she says, advance global goals on gender equality and land restoration, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals more broadly.

“Faced with this ambition, Algeria is taking concrete measures to support family farming and the allocation of agricultural concessions for the benefit of women, as well as the promotion of the activities developed by them: in particular the extraction of essential oils, pottery, burnous, livestock, milk and its derivatives, honey”, underlines the same source.

The body also revealed in its press release that the development of these value chains has enabled the creation of many job positions, the contribution to the national economy and the improvement of the living conditions of the populations.
