Seven years without Sports Medicine: an absent specialty

Year 2015. That was the year in which the ministries of Health, Education and Employment opted to exclude the specialty of Sports medicine. Paying attention to specific details, it was through the Royal Decree 639/2014, of July 25, which regulates the core, core respecialization and specific training areas.

In its seventh additional provision, the legal norm established the following: “From the call for selective tests 2015 for access in 2016 to specialized health training places, no training places will be offered in the regime of students of the Hydrology specialties medical, Physical Education and Sports MedicineLegal and Forensic Medicine and Industrial and Galenic Pharmacy”.

“They intend to promote healthy habits, prevent and treat diseases through physical exercise, improve the performance of our elite athletes and all of this, in the purest style of enlightened despotism, ‘Everything for sport, but without the sports doctor'”

The dissenting voices were notorious then. From the Andalusian Society of Sports Medicine (Same) described the decision as “a total contradiction”since “they aim to promote healthy habits, encourage healthy sports practice, prevent sudden deaths in sports, prevent and treat diseases through physical exercise, prevent the use of doping substances, improve the performance of our elite athletes and all this, in the purest style of enlightened despotism, ‘Everything for sport, but without the sports doctor’”.

SEDENTARISM, A SERIOUS PROBLEM

The World Health Organization (OMS) warns of the problems that exist in developed countries regarding physical inactivity. Not surprisingly, in high-income countries, 26% of men and 35% of women did not get enough physical activity, compared to 12% of men and 24% of women in low-income countries. low.

There are many professionals in the Health Sciences and Physical Activity and Sports Sciences who have been insisting on the need to “prescribe sport” as the best drug for the fight and, fundamentally, the prevention of diseases

The decrease in physical activity is partly due to inactivity during leisure time and to sedentary behavior at work and at home. Likewise, the increased use of “passive” means of transport also contributes to insufficient physical activity.

In this complex context, the Administration continues without recovering a specialty that, year following year, seems essential for the National Health Systemd (SNS). There are many professionals in Health Sciences and Physical Activity and Sports Sciences who have been insisting on the need to “prescribe sport as the best drug for the fight and, fundamentally, the prevention of diseases.

THE SWEDISH MODEL, AN EXAMPLE

Sweden is a reference, both European and international, thanks to the integration of physical activity as one more service within the public health care. The prescription of physical exercise is a multidisciplinary issue with a single objective: the patient well-being.

And it is that, in addition to the doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, coaches and experts trained specifically for it participate in the process. Thus, physical exercise programs are individualized according to the characteristics and circumstances of each individual, to which are added the scientific evidence.
