Seven outbreaks of smallpox in Evros – Strict controls continue

Seven outbreaks of smallpox are so far the result of the checks carried out by the veterinary teams of the AM-Th Region, which were established from the very beginning for this purpose.

Priority was given to the units located in the paraviral areas if the first cases appear.

The head of the AM-TH Veterinary Services, Nikos Fotinias, speaking to ERT Orestiadas, said that so far there are seven farms that have been affected by this zoonosis, six of which are in South Evros (Evros Delta, Peplo, Gemisti, Tychero) and one in the Northern part (Orestiada), while the animals killed in total reach 1896.

Controls in the northern part of the peripheral zone have been completed, while in the south they are still continuing with the veterinarians as he stated that they are encountering difficulties due to the refusal of the breeders to open their pens.

Three crews, two in the north and one in the south with 8 vets in total, work continuously, going through each pen for the necessary checks.

The entire Region has allocated staff for this purpose, notes Mr. Fotinias, with the assistance of veterinarians from Drama, Xanthi and Rodopi. And this, because those who come into contact with sick animals are out of control for a week and for safety reasons.

Mr. Fotinias referred to the strict burial rules that are followed and to the worry and bad psychological condition of livestock farmers, whose animals are found infected and led to slaughter.

Referring to vaccinations, he emphasized that they are prohibited by the EU because “we cannot detect where the antibodies come from”

The simultaneous occurrence of cases throughout the Parevrian region indicates – according to Mr. Foteinias – that the disease passed from Turkey probably through wild animals and that a great effort will be made to keep it within the boundaries of the prefecture. That is why the controls will be repeated after twenty days from the points that the crews have already passed.

At the moment all the animals are stabled except on the islands where after a relevant decision made last Friday something that also concerns Samothraki, movements for fattening, reproduction and to summer pastures are allowed, while from today Monday slaughtering is also allowed on the island sheep and goats provided they stay within its boundaries.
