At least seven people died in São Paulo due to the strong storms that last Friday unleashed record wind gusts of 107.6 km/h, according to historical data, throughout the metropolitan region, reported today Saturday (10/12/2024) state governmentin Brazil

A man, a woman and a 6-year-old child were crushed to death by a wall that collapsed due to winds in the municipality of Bauru, in the interior of São Paulo.

One person died because a tree fell in a condominium in the capital and in the industrial city of Diadema another also died due to the collapse of a tree.

As of Saturday morning, the Fire Department recorded around 150 calls to respond to fallen trees throughout the metropolitan region.

In the municipality of Cotiatwo people were seriously injured by an avalanche. Security teams rescued them and took them to the nearest hospital, where they later died.

Population without electricity

During the night, more than 2 million people suffered a total power outage and, so far, 1.4 million remain without electricity and with no forecast yet of when service will resume.

The blackout unleashed a wave of criticism from the federal and municipal governments against the energy distribution company, Enelwhich in the early hours of today reported, in a statement, that in some places entire sections of the electrical network were damaged and, therefore, new kilometers of network will need to be rebuilt and poles, transformers and other equipment replaced.

Without water

The lack of electricity also affected the distribution of water in several regions. Given this, Civil Defense recommended that residents “make conscious use of the water stored in the tanks” and “if possible, reserve it until the distribution system is fully operational.”

Since Thursday the 10th, the same government of the State of São Paulo alerted the population to take precautions because it was predicted that there will be heavy rain, with lightning and intense gusts of wind between Wednesday the 9th and Saturday the 12th.
