Settlement Reached: Detroit Officials Address Anti-Islam Remarks by Police Officers

Michigan: Detroit city officials have reached a settlement with Muslim youths who filed a lawsuit once morest police officers who made anti-Islam remarks.
The case was filed once morest the claim that Muslims lie a lot and that Muslim men are pedophiles. The police department took action once morest the officers.

“Through this settlement, we hope that the Detroit Police Department will participate in (anti-bias) training and that officers will have training on how to deal with the Muslim population in Detroit,” the Detroit News quoted Dawud Waleed, Michigan director of the American-Islamic Council, as saying.

The incident related to the case was on September 26, 2020. The woman who lived in her home called 911 to complain that she and her friends had been attacked with a hammer and household items destroyed.

Officers Donald Owens and Nathaniel Mullen of the Detroit Police Department arrived at the scene and spoke with the woman. During the conversation the woman mentioned that she used to live with Muslim youths. Following this, Owen made anti-Muslim remarks, according to the complaint.

The Detroit News found that he made similar remarks to the police officers he was with from the body camera footage of the policemen.

“Muslim men are pedophiles, Muslims lie a lot … they think women don’t have a right to have an opinion,” Owen said in the camera footage.
The footage also captured a female officer saying that women in particular.

It is also alleged that the officers handcuffed the youths with the intention of humiliating them in front of their neighbors because of their religious beliefs. They were later released without any charges.

Detroit Police said they would investigate the allegations once morest the officers when they filed a lawsuit demanding $75,000. Owen was suspended for five days as a result of the investigation.

Middle East Eye reported that a study conducted by Rice University last year found that Muslims are five times more likely to face police harassment than non-Muslims. The study also says that black Muslims face more persecution.
