Egypt on Monday once again rejected any presence of Israeli forces on its border with the Gaza Strip, a Cairo news channel close to the regime reported from senior Egyptian sources.

“Egypt reiterates its assurances to all parties involved that it will not accept any Israeli presence at the Rafah crossing or in the Philadelphia axis,” the source said, referring to the parties who are negotiating to reach an agreement, the satellite channel reported.

“Egypt is managing the mediation between the parties to the Gaza conflict in a manner consistent with its national security and safeguarding the rights of the Palestinian people,” the source added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed this week that he was committed to achieving “all war objectives” before a ceasefire, taking into account “the need to secure the Gaza Strip’s southern border with Egypt.”

This shows Israel’s commitment to retaining troops in Gaza, especially along the border between Gaza and Egypt.

The statement from the Egyptian source comes amid intense diplomatic efforts in Gaza to achieve a ceasefire and avoid an outbreak following the assassinations of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah military commanders in Tehran Wider war.

The latest round of talks hosted by Cairo is based on a framework announced by U.S. President Joe Biden in late May, which he described as an Israeli proposal.

On Sunday, a Hamas official said the movement’s delegation left Cairo after meeting with Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

War broke out in the Gaza Strip on October 7 after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel that killed 1,199 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli data.

251 people were kidnapped during the attack, 105 of whom remain detained in Gaza, and 34 of whom have been declared dead by the army.

Israel’s bombing and ground operations in the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas attacks have killed 40,435 people, according to the Hamas health ministry.
